Every time I step into Katie’s house, it takes me back to another decade. A place in time, where things were simple, real. The home is focused on function and love. Katie’s seemingly simple decorating style, is, in fact, not that at all. Every piece of furniture, every frame, (even the empty one) is thoughtfully hung, placed and used (and was probably purchased at thrift or handed down). I have one word to describe Katie: grateful. She is grateful for her home (even those effing leaves!), her children, her friends, and hugs. She loves this town and the people, and she’s made this known through her thoughtful, witty and sometimes hilarious posts on ilovemyburg.com. (Katie provides words, Brandy provides photos. Check out Brandy’s site here.) I digressed.
It snowed the day before Thanksgiving. The big fluffy flakes that fell on Wednesday slowly melted away from Thursday’s sunny skies. I arrived to Katie’s early to help cook, chat and share a beer. We talked, Katie sang Kopecky in the kitchen, the kids played games, and I soaked it all in. This day, Thanksgiving, is intended to be spent with family, and since my family is in PA and WA and hers in SC, we decided to forgo any travels and stay local. We decided to have a “friends-giving”. It is known that friends are the family we choose. Because they really are.
During dinner, once everyone arrived, I asked what everyone was thankful for. Here’s what they said:
Blake: Food.
Cal: God.
Ella: Bagels.
Bree: Music.
Michael: Doors.
Danielle: Freedom.
Ben: State lines.
Brandy: Camera.
Katie: Choices
I could elaborate and define each person's answer given, but take from it what you will. Below are the photos from our day. I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving was filled with love and light. DC
